We evaluated the feeding of fish species of the Nova Avanhandava Reservoir, low Tietê River, São Paulo State, Brazil. Fishes were collected in two stretches of the reservoir: Santa Bárbara (14 samples) and Bonito (two samples) between September 2002 and March 2004, using gill and seining nets. The results of stomach contents analysis were expressed with the frequency of occurrence and gravimetric method, combined in the Alimentary Index (AI). The 20 species studied consumed 52 food items, grouped in 10 food categories: aquatic insects, terrestrial insects, crustaceans, fish, macroinvertebrates, microcrustaceans, algae, vegetal matter, detritus/sediment and scales. This atlas presents in a synthetic form the hydrodynamical, geological and biological characteristics of one of the most studied region of the French littoral. Geologic and geophysical data of the Saint-Brieuc Bay show that the deep basement consists of pre-palaeozoic or palaeozoic sedimentary series in the centre of the Bay, whereas metamorphic and magmatic formations are dominant in coastal regions. The location of superficial sediments in the Bay, is mainly due to marine currents. A granulometric gradient, from very fine to coarse sediments, appears in two directions: from the coast towards the high sea, and from the west to the east. Early (post)larval fish constitute a significant part of the temporary hyperbenthos, i.e. of the fauna living in the lower reaches of the water column close to the substratum. Information on the densities and spatial and temporal variations of these stages, as well as on their lengths at the moment of occurrence, can be an important contribution to the knowledge of their dispersion, migrations and to the identification of possible bottlenecks in their recruitment. In coastal areas, reef-builder worms often are bio-engineers by structuring their physical and biological environment. Many studies showed that this engineering role is determined by the densities of the engineer species itself, the highest densities approximately corresponding to the most stable areas from a sedimentological point of view, and hosting the richest and the most diverse benthic fauna.
