Annual and seasonal dynamics of deep-sea megafaunal epibenthic communities in Barkley Canyon (British Columbia, Canada): a response to climatology, surface productivity and benthic boundary layer variation ArchiMer
Chauvet, Pauline; Metaxas, Anna; Hay, Alex E.; Matabos, Marjolaine.
Understanding the impact of the environment on temporal trends in the composition and abundance of deep-sea species is essential for forecasting evolution of the community in the context of climate change. The recent development of deep-sea observatories enables multidisciplinary studies of long duration and high temporal resolution. We used a platform at the Ocean Networks Canada NEPTUNE Observatory located in the axis of Barkley Canyon between June 2012 and January 2015 to: (1) characterize the megabenthic community and the environmental conditions in the canyon; (2) investigate temporal patterns in the faunal community; and (3) determine the influence of environmental conditions on the observed patterns. The megafaunal epibenthic community, which...

Aquatic insects as the main food resource of fish the community in a Neotropical reservoir Neotropical Ichthyology
Vidotto-Magnoni,Ana Paula; Carvalho,Edmir Daniel.
We evaluated the feeding of fish species of the Nova Avanhandava Reservoir, low Tietê River, São Paulo State, Brazil. Fishes were collected in two stretches of the reservoir: Santa Bárbara (14 samples) and Bonito (two samples) between September 2002 and March 2004, using gill and seining nets. The results of stomach contents analysis were expressed with the frequency of occurrence and gravimetric method, combined in the Alimentary Index (AI). The 20 species studied consumed 52 food items, grouped in 10 food categories: aquatic insects, terrestrial insects, crustaceans, fish, macroinvertebrates, microcrustaceans, algae, vegetal matter, detritus/sediment and scales. The aquatic insects (mainly Chironomidae, Odonata and Ephemeroptera) were the most common...

Asociación bentónicas en bancos de vieira patagónica (Zygochlamys patagonica) en el Mar Argentino OceanDocs
Schejter, L..
The different aspects of the benthic assemblages at the Patagonian scallop beds in the Argentine Sea (SW Atlantic) were studied. The Patagonian scallop (Zygochlamys patagonica) is a commercial species distributed in the Magellanic Biogeographic Province, and has been commercially exploited since 1996. Temporal and spatial studies were performed in the community composition between 39°50'S and 36°15'S, and between 1998 and 2003, concluding that the species association was persistent after more than 7 years of trawling activities. Species composition in an exclusion area (closed to scallop fishing) did not differ from surrounding fished areas during the studied period, showing only a higher scallop biomass. ABC curves showed a pattern coincident with a non...

Atlas thématique de l'environnement marin en baie de Saint-Brieuc (Côtes-d'Armor) ArchiMer
Augris, Claude; Hamon, Dominique.
This atlas presents in a synthetic form the hydrodynamical, geological and biological characteristics of one of the most studied region of the French littoral. Geologic and geophysical data of the Saint-Brieuc Bay show that the deep basement consists of pre-palaeozoic or palaeozoic sedimentary series in the centre of the Bay, whereas metamorphic and magmatic formations are dominant in coastal regions. The location of superficial sediments in the Bay, is mainly due to marine currents. A granulometric gradient, from very fine to coarse sediments, appears in two directions: from the coast towards the high sea, and from the west to the east. Rocky substrates disrupt the sediment distribution, with, most of the time, a concentration of coarse sediments near the...

Early postlarval fish in the hyperbenthos of the Dutch Delta (south-west Netherlands) OMA
Beyst, B.; Mees, J.; Cattrijsse, A..
Early (post)larval fish constitute a significant part of the temporary hyperbenthos, i.e. of the fauna living in the lower reaches of the water column close to the substratum. Information on the densities and spatial and temporal variations of these stages, as well as on their lengths at the moment of occurrence, can be an important contribution to the knowledge of their dispersion, migrations and to the identification of possible bottlenecks in their recruitment. Therefore the hyperbenthos of the Voordelta, a shallow coastal zone in front of the Dutch Delta, as well as that of the subtidal channels and the intertidal brackish marsh creeks of the Westerschelde Estuary, was sampled monthly during one year by means of a sledge and a stow net. A total of 37...

Influence of stability and fragmentation of a worm-reef on benthic macrofauna ArchiMer
Godet, Laurent; Fournier, Jerome; Jaffre, Mikael; Desroy, Nicolas.
In coastal areas, reef-builder worms often are bio-engineers by structuring their physical and biological environment. Many studies showed that this engineering role is determined by the densities of the engineer species itself, the highest densities approximately corresponding to the most stable areas from a sedimentological point of view, and hosting the richest and the most diverse benthic fauna. Here, we tested the potential influence of the spatio-temporal dynamics and the spatial fragmentation of one of the largest European intertidal reefs generated by the marine worm Lanice conchilega (Pallas, 1766) (Annelida, Polychaeta) on the associated benthic macrofauna. We demonstrated that the worm densities do have a significant positive role on the...

Initial results of the benthic fauna studies in the northern Lake Victoria OceanDocs
Mbahinzireki, G.B..
The paper presents initial results of relative abundance, composition and distribution of benthic organisms in an ecologically and environmentally changing northern Lake Victoria. The results suggest that the density of most of the zoobenthos has gone up since the pre-perch era despite the absence of comparative data. Increases in densities were noted for dipteran larvae followed by Caridina nilotica, ostracods, oligochaetes, molluscs and nymphs of Anisoptera and Ephemeroptera, in that order. Possible reasons to account for the increase are advanced. Inshore stations held higher densities than the offshore station. Type of the sediment and physico-chemical factors seem to influence the production and distribution of...
